Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena’s family of powerful supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.
Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan’s eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there’s no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town’s tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.
So this book annoyingly took me ages to read though I honestly don’t know why. It started off kind of slow, but I think that may have been because it had been ages since I had read Beautiful Creatures (The previous book in the series). Despite this, the book was enjoyable and very addicting.
Once I got started on reading it properly, it took everything to stop myself from reading in class and when I was on the train and at my boyfriends. It was slow, but it got better. A lot better. Though it didn’t always seem as though the book was necessary, Kami and Margaret had a lot of unanswered questions and as a reader I was reading on to find these answers. As any good author, these two answered most of my questions but left me with a whole load of other questions – good job Beautiful Chaos is already out in shops then?
I liked the added characters, they were very well explored in one book. Liv is by far my favourite new character and I’m happy that there wasn’t some annoying romance story between her and Ethan – no matter how many times it appeared as though there was going to be – I was worried about a stupid love triangle.
I like the twists that take place with a lot of the characters, non of which I can mention due to this being a spoiler free blog (most of the time anyway). Ridley’s twist I think was one of my favourites, the other one I can’t mention as it is definitely a plot spoiler all on it’s own.
I’m not to sure how I feel about Ethan and Lena during this book, though I’m happy with how they turned out. It’s nice that they can be as they are – though the result of Lena’s claiming is still shocking!
As i’ve stated to a few friends, I enjoyed this book and the twists were good. However it doesn’t cut it for me. I really do prefer Beautiful Creatures. Unfortunately because of this, the rating is:
Rating: 4 Stars
